  • Kolkata: The city woke up to a cloudy sky and consistent, light drizzles on a gloomy Sunday even as a deep depression moved westward across Gangetic Bengal and Kolkata. For the second consecutive day, Kolkata was soaked by rain though it remained light on Sunday. With the depression moving away towards Jharkhand, the rain could turn infrequent and the clouds could recede from Monday, said the Met office.

Kolkata received 30.2 mm rain during the day. On Saturday, the city received 62.2 mm rain.

For the second successive day, the difference between the maximum and temperature remained just one degree.

A bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre on Sunday said the deep depression over Gangetic West Bengal moved west-northwestward at a speed of 8 kmph, about 90 km west-northwest of Kolkata (West Bengal), 90 km south-southeast of Bankura, 140 km east of Jamshedpur and 230 km east-southeast of Ranchi.

“It is likely to move slowly, nearly westwards across Gangetic West Bengal and maintain its intensity of deep depression till Monday. Thereafter, it may weaken gradually into a depression and move nearly westwards across Jharkhand and North Chhattisgarh during subsequent 48 hours,” said the bulletin.

Most parts of the city received intermittent drizzles throughout the day. It continued till late into the evening. Some areas of south and central Kolkata received a couple of intense spells that were short. No waterlogging was reported from anywhere in the city.

“The system moved slowly across south Bengal on Sunday which led to the prolonged drizzles. It moved away towards the western districts of the state by Sunday evening and the drizzles will turn sporadic in Kolkata from Monday. Bankura, Purulia and West Burdwan will receive more consistent drizzles on Monday, though chances of heavy rain are low,” said RMC weather scientist HR Biswas.
