  • Kolkata: A day after OCs (officer-in-charge) of several police stations (PS) and traffic guards expressed discontent over the arrest of former Tala OC — Abhijit Mandal — in Kolkata rape-murder case, three senior officers of Kolkata Police (KP) visited his Survey Park residence off EM Bypass on Monday.

These senior cops — additional CP (IV) Solomon Nesakumar, DC East division Arish Bilal and DC south suburban division Bidisha Kalita Dasgupta — had a long discussion with Mandal’s wife.During his visit, Nesakumar asserted that the KP top brass was standing firmly by the side of Mandal. The additional CP also added that he believed Mondal was innocent and had discharged his duty with good intention in the interest of justice.

On Sunday, several police OCs and additional OCs of KP had darkened their WhatsApp display pictures completely as a mark of protest and met commissioner of police (CP), Vineet Kumar Goyal, to express their disappointment over CBI arresting Mandal. They had urged the CP to ensure adequate legal help for their colleague.

“It’s my personal belief that the OC’s actions weren’t faulty. He had arrived at the crime scene in the shortest possible time. He did the best he could in the interest of justice, addressing the procedural issues raised by doctors and others. We are with him,” said Nesakumar.Abhijit Mandal’s wife, Sangeeta, told reporters that the CBI had interrogated her husband several times before arresting him. She claimed that a CBI officer had informed her about Mandal’s arrest over the telephone on Saturday.

She also alleged that she was made to wait for over three hours to meet Mandal, despite her repeated requests to the sleuths.

“I feel the investigation is going in a different direction. My husband has also worked hard so that justice is delivered to the victim. We want justice too. I have two daughters, I understand. He has done everything he could. He has cooperated with the CBI. His health is not good. Even then, he went and appeared,” she said.
