  • Kolkata: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) West Bengal has demanded that the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) be dissolved, alleging that it is the epicentre of threat culture and corruption.

Headed by Trinamool MLA Sudipto Roy, its members are allegedly part of the ‘North Bengal lobby’. Organisations like Joint Platform of Doctors, Protect the Warriors, Doctors for Patients and Service Doctors Forum have made similar demands. These senior doctors’ organisations had even marched to the council office on a few occasions during the protests, demanding the council be cleansed.

Various doctor bodies had alleged that the last election to the council was rigged in favour of doctors belonging to the lobby. “WBMC should be dissolved immediately as most members are now under the lens either from the central agencies or from health department,” said a member of the Joint Platform of doctors.

Other elected members of council include Sandip Ghosh, Birupaskha Biswas, Avik De and Sushanta Ghosh who are being accused by the larger medical community of spreading threat culture and corruption.

IMA West Bengal has also demanded that Suhrita Paul be removed from all administrative roles as they said that under her tenure as VC of West Bengal University of Health Sciences, examination system was compromised. Paul is now posted as principal of Barsat Medical College after her posting as principal of R G Kar drew agitation from the students there.
