  • 12 Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate, looking into the alleged financial irregularities at the R G Kar Medical College, on Tuesday conducted searches at six premises in Kolkata, including the nursing home and residence of Sudipto Roy, Trinamool MLA and former chairman of the Rogi Kalyan Samiti at the hospital. The CBI had, earlier last week, questioned Roy in connection with the case.

The ED officials reached the Sinthi nursing home of Roy around 6.30 am. They went inside where Roy has his residence, too. They went to an annexe building of the nursing home nearby. By the afternoon, a team of the ED officials left Roy’s nursing home and reached another residence of Roy at Dadpur.

Roy’s proximity with former R G Kar principal Sandip Ghosh came under the scanner of the central investigation agency after his statements claiming an unnatural death of the R G Kar doctor surfaced. Roy had received a call from Ghosh a little after 10 am on Aug 9 informing him about the incident at the medical college. Roy had, after the incident, told media persons that it was a case of unnatural death.

The agency claimed that he had a role to play in the tenders and other contracts given by the hospital. There had also been allegations against Roy of swapping new machines at R G Kar with old ones at his own nursing home.

Roy was elected as the president of West Bengal Medical Council in Nov 2022. He is also the chairperson of West Bengal Health Recruitment Board, which has also been mired in controversy of corruption. Roy said swapping machines was impossible. He told officials that the models are different and that they can be inspected anytime.

Another ED team reached the Ballygunge home of a businessman who supplied medical equipment to R G Kar.
