  • Kolkata: A 19-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by two youths in Khardah on the northern fringes of Kolkata, after befriending her on a social media platform.

The duo also allegedly filmed the act and threatened to share it on social media if she dared to raise her voice against them.

The police arrested both on Monday and seized two cell phones from them.

The two accused have been identified as Subham Dhar and Arghya Das, both residents of Belgharia. They have been remanded in police custody for five days after being produced in a court on Tuesday.

According to police sources, Dhar befriended the girl on a social media platform nearly four months ago. “Later, the youth developed a relationship with the girl and the duo met each other on several occasions,” an investigating officer said.

Locals said the duo had also participated in the ‘Reclaim the Night’ movement demanding justice for the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case in Sodepur near the deceased PGT doctor’s neighbourhood on Aug 14 midnight.

According to the complaint lodged by the girl with Khardah police station, Dhar, along with Das, came to the girl’s house on Sunday evening and abused her sexually.

“The duo consumed alcohol and forced the girl to drink with them. Later, they raped her and recorded the crime scene on their mobile phones,” the girl reportedly told police in her complaint.

Later on Sunday night, the girl lodged an FIR against the duo for gang rape.

“Soon after receiving the complaint, police arrested the accused and produced them in court. The girl was sent to Khardah State General Hospital for a medical examination, and her confidential statement was recorded. An investigation is on, and two accused are being interrogated,” DCP Indra Badan Jha told TOI.
