  • Kolkata: Former Trinamool MP and Presidency College alumnus Jawhar Sircar called the protest against the R G Kar rape and murder as a “spontaneous outburst of public angst” not only to seek justice for the victim but also to raise voice against corruption. Sircar was addressing a mass convention at Presidency university’s Derozio auditorium on the R G Kar incident.

Eminent personalities from film fraternity, artists, activists, lawyers, doctors and teachers took part in the convention.

“I have not seen such a spontaneous non-political citizens’ agitation in the 72 years of my life. The anger among common people is not only because they seek justice but also because they could not accept the unchecked corruption where officers and doctors are getting prime postings and some getting rich overnight. It is a wake-up call,” said Sircar.

Actor Parambrata Chattopadhyay saluted the people’s movement for staying “apolitical”. Artist Sanatan Dinda, who resigned from Rajya Charukala Parshad in protest of the incident, painted a canvas live on the stage. While signing his name on the canvas he wrote “Sanatan Tilottama Dinda”.

Among the other speakers were doctors Abhijit Chowdhury, Diptendra Sarkar, lawyer Jayanta Narayan Chatterjee, JU professor Payel Basu, trans activists Anurag Maitreyee, actors Swastika Mukherjee, Sudipta Chakraborty, Debalina Dutta and many others.
