  • Kolkata: Two days after taking charge as the new Kolkata Police commissioner, Manoj Verma visited R G Kar hospital on Thursday afternoon, where a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered on Aug 9, sparking nationwide protests and prompting junior doctors in the state to launch a cease-work.

Accompanied by new DC North, Dipak Sarkar, who has replaced Abhishek Gupta — as per the demand of the protesting doctors — Verma went to the emergency building of the hospital that housed the seminar room where the doctor was killed. It’s also the same building where the ground floor was vandalized by a mob on Aug 14.

From there, he went to the administrative building and met senior hospital officials, including principal Manas Bandopadhyay, MSVP Saptarshi Chatterjee and additional medical superintendent Dwaipayan Biswas. Heads of some departments like forensic medicine and orthopaedics were also present when Verma dropped in at principal’s office.

Officials said Verma assured that KP will extend all possible help on security issues on the campus. “The CP wanted a map of the RG Kar campus which we provided,” said an official.

Sources said the CP’s visit was a much needed one to address the trust deficit among junior doctors. “It was a very short visit but perhaps aimed at confidence building which was very much needed,” said another official.

The CP also met CISF personnel on the campus and according to sources, asked the CISF commandant to get in touch with him for any coordination related issues. He left the campus around 2.30 pm and returned to Lalbazar.

Earlier in the day, Verma visited Tala, Sinthi and Cossipore police stations. At Tala, he spoke to Moloy Dutta, the additional OC of Shyampukur PS who is now holding the charge of Tala PS after the arrest of ex-OC Abhijit Mandal. Sources said he spoke to all officers before holding a 15-minute meeting with Dutta.
