  • Kolkata: The Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) plans to strengthen and widen the Sector V Ring Road to prevent its sides beside the water body from subsiding and to make it a three-lane corridor.

“It has been noticed a few times that the edges of the Ring Road towards the water body have collapsed due to soil losing its grip. It has been planned to strengthen the road by doing piling on the sides of the road along with planting trees so that the road’s edges do not collapse,” said an official. An estimate of Rs 4.6 crore has been fixed for an agency to do the strengthening work.

Officials said there was a need to widen the existing two-lane ring road to create more space for vehicles to move and prevent traffic congestion. A topographical survey will be done along with drawing lane alignment and pavement design. “It would help to have a third lane for providing more space for vehicles to move on,” said a NDITA official.

The 2.5 km-long Ring Road in Sector V surrounding a water body was set up by NDITA in 2013 to decongest the main thoroughfare in Sector V connecting New Town and to reduce travel time to move in between New Town and Salt Lake. The road is called ‘Ring Road’ as it forms a ring surrounding Sector V.
