MP Santanu Sen at the meeting KOLKATA: The R G Kar rape-murder has cast its shadow on the election of office bearers of IMA Bengal headquarters in Kolkata, for which preparations were being taken on Sunday. Three doctors, who are believed to be part of the North Bengal lobby, were booed out by the state IMA members when the trio reached the Park Circus office on Sunday. Trinamool MP Santanu Sen, who currently holds the post of honorary secretary of IMA Bengal, also bowed out of the race even as his name was proposed for the election.
The IMA Bengal members were holding a meeting on the preparations for its upcoming election when the three doctors - Tapas Chakraborty, Jaya Majumdar and Priyanka Rana, who are also members - reached there.
Chakraborty was seen at R G Kar on Aug 9 when the body of the 31-year-old PGT doctor was found. The general body of IMA Malda branch had earlier removed Chakraborty from the post of its president till the organisation got a satisfactory answer from him over his presence at R G Kar that day. IMA Bengal has also demanded his removal from West Bengal Medical Council where Chakraborty is a member.
Sources in state IMA said there were allegations of irregularities against Majumdar who is attached with Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Kalyani. Rana, attached with Swasthya Bhavan, is reportedly close to Birupaksha Biswas. They faced 'go back' slogan when they came to attend the meeting.
During the meeting, Sen said he won't be contesting the election.
