Restrooms, more cams: Govt hosps start infra upgrade work

12 Kolkata: Medical colleges across the city have started working on security and amenity infrastructure for junior doctors. From installing additional CCTVs to renovating or constructing restrooms, washrooms and ensuring provision for drinking water, work is on in full swing. Hospital administrators are hopeful of some visible changes within a week.
The process for additional security personnel too has been initiated.TOI on Thursday reported about the health department sanctioning 1,514 more security personnel for each medical colleges.
“We have started the work on restrooms with attached washrooms (separate for male and female resident doctors). The process of recruiting 75 additional guards will start from Monday,” said Medical College Hospital Kolkata (MCHK) MSVP Anjan Adhikari.
All hospitals have formed panels to implement security and amenity measures raised by junior doctors. Committees include all stakeholders, including representatives from juniors. Most hospitals have also started improving illumination on campuses.
“Work on illumination in some stretches is almost over. Installation of CCTV cameras will begin by Monday, we have already procured the equipment. We have also identified departments that did not have sufficient duty rooms and toilets and started working on it,” said NRS principal Pit Baran Chakraborty.
“The work on renovation/construction of rest rooms, washrooms and installation of CCTVs is on. We have completed about 50% of the work and are working on the rest. The recruitment process for additional security guards has also begun,” said IPGMER director Manimoy Banerjee.
“We will be installing around 263 additional CCTV cameras. While we already have some, tender has been floated for the rest,” said Subhra Mitra, principal, CNMC.
Sources in R G Kar Hospital also said that work on improving amenities and security was going on a war-footing.
