12 Kolkata: Junior doctors continued to hold Abhaya medical camps in the flood-affected areas of Bengal. On Monday, teams from IPGMER and Medical College Kolkata (MCK) had set up such camps. They also distributed relief material, including dry food items and water along with medicines for common ailments at some camps.
Many villages in Howrah, Hooghly, Midnapore and Jhargram in South Bengal had been inundated for close to a week now. With more rain predicted by the Met office, the flood woes could be far from over. West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF) decided to go to the flood-affected areas with their Abhaya camps last Thursday when they announced resumption of emergency duty.
Two teams with each having 15 junior doctors from MCK set up separate medical camps at Patula village in Arambag and Goja village in Udyanarayanpur. Villagers lined up for health check-up. The junior doctors were also seen raising ‘we want justice’ slogans at the beginning of the camp. “We tended to around 400 patients,” said Dayit Goswami, a first-year gynaecology PGT at MCK, who was part of the team at Arambag.
The teams from IPGMER had their camps at Dhamla in Khanakul and Boro Dighrui villages of Hooghly. Other colleges in the districts are also holding such camps.
