• RG Kar rape and murder: Forensic expert claims was asked to perform autopsy same day by ex-councillor; BJP’s Suvendhu Adhikari names him

  • Hours after a forensic medicine expert of Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital alleged that a former councillor, a distant relative of the family of the woman trainee doctor who was raped and murdered last month, forced him to expedite the post-mortem process, BJP leader Suvendhu Adhikari named the person on Monday.

The forensic medicine expert was among the several people questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with its ongoing probe into the rape and murder of the woman trainee doctor at R G Kar Hospital last month.

A video that surfaced online shows the forensic expert alleging that a former councillor, a distant relative of the victim’s family, had put pressure on him to expedite the post-mortem process. He made the claim while speaking to reporters as he was leaving the CGO Complex later on Sunday after he was questioned.

CBI has not reacted to the allegations.

In a long post on X, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari named the former councillor as Sanjib Mukherjee, who allegedly forced forensic experts to expedite the process.

“Who is this person? The person is Sanjib Mukherjee. He is the former CPIM Councillor of Panihati Municipality, who joined TMC later on and became a close associate of Panihati TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh,” said Adhikari in his post.

“Everyone knows that the victim was cremated in haste. The Police were monitoring the operations at the crematorium and there was an extraordinary hurry at the crematorium to dispose off the body.

Panihati MLA; Nirmal Ghosh was himself present as per the instructions of Mamata Banerjee. Strangely, this Sanjib Mukherjee is the signatory on the Cremation Certificate, without being a kin of the victim. There’s also another name/signature on the document – Somenath Dey. There is another former TMC Councillor of Panihati Municipality with the same name. Is he the same person?” He asked.

A staff of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital had claimed that the police had directed them to cremate the body of the doctor on priority, saying there was a huge crowd present at the crematorium. While the police denied the allegations, the victim’s family also claimed they wanted to keep the body but post-mortem and cremation was done in haste.

The body of the trainee doctor, a second-year postgraduate student, was found on August 9 in the seminar room of R G Kar Hospital. A civic volunteer with the Kolkata police, Sanjoy Roy, was arrested the following day in connection with the crime, which triggered a nationwide furore.
