Corruption cry from MCH mirrors RG Kar charges; plaint with CMO, CBI, ED

Kolkata: A whistle-blower has brought up charges of corruption at Medical College Hospital Kolkata (MCHK) similar to the one that is being unearthed at R G Kar Medical College after the rape-murder of the 31-year-old PGT doctor there.
In the complaint lodged with the chief minister’s office, the CBI, ED and the state vigilance commission, the complainant has named Sudipto Roy, the chairman of Rogi Kalyan Samity at MCHK (dissolved a few days ago) as the kingpin of the corruption nexus, similar to the links that Roy had with former R G Kar principal Sandip Ghosh. The 23-year-old complainant has alleged Roy colluded with MCHK MSVP Anjan Adhikari and a few other officials of the medical college to commit the financial irregularities, which are similar to those being probed at RG Kar.
“Major portion of consumables purchased from govt exchequer meant for MCHK were siphoned off to Dr Sudipto Roy’s nursing home, the New Saraju Nursing Home, and the clinical laboratory and retail medical stores of his spouse,” said the complaint. Its copy was sent to the CM and the other investigation agencies on Sept 16.
It also alleged that Roy forced contractual workers from Medical College to work in his nursing home and that Roy along with Adhikari and few others committed financial irregularities by granting undue favour to a company named Manjusha.
Diverting patients to Roy’s nursing home, permitting illegal shops/stalls to operate on the hospital campus in lieu of monetary transactions, testing of blood samples supplied by private labs at the hospital’s central lab in exchange of commission to Roy are some of the other allegations.
“A local strongman by the name Bashir Miyan, employed in the MSVP’s office via dubious means, helps in condemning many good equipment so that those can be outsourced to Sudipto Roy’s nursing home. Bashir Miyan uses muscle power to suppress the voice of any employee opposing such illegalities,” said the complaint. TOI has a copy of it.
Miyan allegedly runs ‘Ganapati Xerox counter’ near gate 3 of the hospital for which he “pays to Roy”. The complaint also mentioned about Roy and Adhikari giving illegal or fake admission and employment in some academic courses and cited examples of such cases in detail.
“Whatever I have penned is only the tip of the iceberg,” wrote complainant Sormistha Mondal, a student of hospital management, urging for a thorough probe.
“It is unfortunate that my name has been dragged into such allegations which are baseless,” Roy told TOI.
Adhikari, who is a professor of pharmacology, also denied the charges and said he is ready to face any probe. “I am aware that a woman has lodged such a complaint. All I can say is that MCHK is 100% clean and free of corruption. I have no connection with people who are into corrupt dealings.” he added.
Adhikari was appointed the MSVP at MCHK in July 2022 and prior to this, he was working as pharmacology professor at Coochbehar Medical College. The complainant also alleged that Adhikari’s appointment was done at the behest of Roy.
