  • Kolkata: The Met office has warned of heavy rain in parts of south Bengal between Tuesday night and Thursday. It has also issued a thunder, lightning and gusty wind warning for some districts. Kolkata may receive light to moderate showers during the period, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata.

The spell of rain will be under the influence of a low-pressure area over West central Bay of Bengal and adjoining Northwest Bay off north Andhra-south Odisha coasts.

“There is also an associated cyclonic circulation that extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height,” said a special weather bulletin from RMC Kolkata. The system that was a cyclonic circulation till Monday had already been injecting moisture into the land.

With a few spells of rain from Monday evening, the mercury in Kolkata has already started dipping. On Tuesday, the maximum temperature climbed down to 30.9°C from 33.9°C the previous day. The minimum dipped to 28.2°C from 30.6°C as well. The Met office expects the minimum temperature to hover around the normal mark by Wednesday.

“We can expect more intense showers in Kolkata between Wednesday and Thursday. While the showers in Kolkata are expected to be light to moderate, some localities, especially those neighbouring South and North 24 Parganas, may get heavy showers,” said an official at RMC Kolkata.

Other districts that are likely to be affected include East Midnapore, Murshidabad, Nadia, East and West Burdwan, Birbhum, Hooghly Purulia, Jhargram, Purulia and Bankura. Parts of some of these districts are already flooded.
