The India Meteorological Department’s Alipore unit predicted a new low-pressure area forming in the central-western Bay of Bengal on Wednesday, likely due to the influence of an ongoing cyclone in the central Bay of Bengal.
Southern West Bengal is expected to experience scattered rain with thunderstorms due to both the cyclone and the depression. On Tuesday, light to moderate rain is anticipated in most of its districts, except for Nadia, Murshidabad, Purulia, and East Burdwan. However, rainfall is expected to intensify on Wednesday and Thursday, in West Burdwan, West Midnapore, Birbhum, Murshidabad, South 24 Parganas, and East Midnapore.
In the remaining southern West Bengal districts, moderate rain with thunderstorms is expected. Additionally, winds of up to 30 kilometers per hour are expected in South 24 Parganas and the two Medinipur districts during this period.
Two weeks ago, heavy rains and subsequent conditions caused significant devastation in large parts of southern West Bengal. Even after the rain subsided, water levels remained high in many areas, leading to the submergence of numerous villages.
The IMD predicted heavy rainfall in northern West Bengal districts, including Malda, North Dinajpur, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar, until Friday. Heavy rain is especially likely in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar districts on Friday.
In Kolkata, cloudy skies and light to moderate rain are expected throughout Tuesday. The city’s maximum temperature is predicted to reach 34 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature will be 28 degrees Celsius.
The IMD reports the presence of two cyclones in western-central Bay of Bengal and along the southern Myanmar coast. Additionally, the monsoon axis stretches across various regions of South Bengal, while another axis extends from the Andhra Pradesh coast to the southern Myanmar coast.
