Kolkata: The KMC will set up a plant for treatment of bio-medical waste and its recycling. The plant to be set up at Dhapa will have the capacity to treat all bio-medical waste to be collected from govt hospitals and private healthcare facilities, city mayor Firhad Hakim said on Wednesday.
Hakim said, the necessity of setting up a plant at Dhapa was felt amid reports of a racket engaged in illegal recycling and sale of bio-medical waste.Currently, three private agencies collect bio-medical waste from hospitals and nursing homes from across 144 KMC wards.
“The plant with an incinerator will take care of the hazardous bio-medical waste as currently there is lack of vigil on scientific disposal of bio-medical wastes,” said a KMC official.
The KMC solid waste management will outsource the collection of bio-medical waste, but KMC will bear the responsibility of treatment and disposal of the waste.“We hope to give a nod for the plant construction by early next year. By the end of 2025 the plant is expected to be ready for operation,” said a KMC official.
