  • KOLKATA: Union Minister and West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar declared a pause in the protest over the rape and murder of an RG Kar Medical College and Hospital trainee doctor during Durga Puja festivities on Wednesday.

Majumdar stated that the BJP would resume the protest after the celebrations until chief minister Mamata Banerjee is compelled to step down.

Sukanta Majumdar said, "Our movement is going on and will continue. Today was the last day of political activity before the Durga Puja celebrations. During the Puja we will not stage any protest. After the Durga Puja we will again take to the streets. We will do gherao at the Nabanna. BJP will remain on the road until we force the chief minister to resign."

On Wednesday, Sandip Ghosh, former Principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, arrested officer-in-charge of Tala police station, were transferred from Sealdah Court to the Presidency Jail.

The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested both Ghosh and Mondal in relation to the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College. On the same day, junior doctors also assembled to honor the victim.

The West Bengal Medical Council revoked the principal's medical practitioner registration earlier this week.

During the investigation, ED visited the residence of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, at Chinar Park in Kolkata to conduct a search operation. ED had filed a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to investigate money laundering allegations against Sandip Ghosh in the financial irregularities case.

On September 10, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court remanded Sandip Ghosh and three others to judicial custody in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital financial irregularities case. Ghosh was being investigated for alleged corruption and financial irregularities at the college and hospital, following a directive from a single bench of the Calcutta High Court, which ordered the CBI to investigate the matter.
