  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has stepped up its anti-littering drive across the city. According to a KMC solid waste management department source the civic body has lodged hundreds of complaints against specific individuals in the residential areas and traders in the marketplaces in the past few months. The KMC SWM department has started collecting spot fines in several boroughs to discourage littering after the first round of garbage collection in the morning.

The solid waste management department may impose spot fines depending on the gravity of the offence. In the first stage, the KMC inspectors are allowed to collect Rs 580 as fine. If the offence is repeated the civic body may impose Rs 1,080 as spot fine. The KMC can also lodge a complaint against a habitual offender at the magistrate’s court. The member, mayor-in-council overseeing the KMC solid waste management department, said the civic body was contemplating introducing online payment for collection of spot fines. Some of the worst boroughs include III, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, XIII, and XV.
