  • The house located on Badan Ray Lane off CIT Road KOLKATA: After the CBI and ED raids, it is now Kolkata Municipal Corporation that is set to launch an inquiry into former R G Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh’s four-storey house in Beleghata.

Located on Badan Ray Lane off CIT Road, the house has been in the spotlight since multiple allegations of Ghosh’s involvement in the cover-up of the R G Kar Hospital rape-murder case and financial irregularities at the medical college tumbled out of the closet in the aftermath of the incident on Aug 9.

Local residents who had started agitating before his house had also alleged illegal construction in the terrace and extension of the boundary wall to usurp a civic manhole.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation buildings department has now started an inquiry into the construction irregularities. Civic officials said the inquiry was launched following a complaint lodged by a structural engineer.

According to a source in the KMC buildings department, an instruction has been issued for the executive engineer (buildings department) of borough III from the civic headquarters to check the details about the alleged illegal construction in the G+3 building.

“We have asked the borough executive engineer to check necessary details about any deviation from the sanctioned plan,” said a senior KMC buildings department official posted at civic headquarters. However, sources in KMC buildings department said the primary focus would be on illegal construction on the terrace.

“We have received a complaint about an illegal construction of a pergola on the terrace. Based on the complaint, an inquiry has been ordered. We will also need to check whether the entire building was constructed according to the plan that we had sanctioned,” said a civic official.

“If buildings department finds irregularities during spot inspection, a notice will be sent to the owner, Sandip Ghosh. The owner will then be asked to appear at the KMC headquarters for hearing. The hearing officer then will decide whether to regularise the construction or pass an order for demolition,” said A civic official.
