  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is set to sanction plans for the reconstruction of buildings that will accommodate the victims of the 2019 Bowbazar metro cave-in incident. In Aug that year, a tunnel boring machine had hit an aquifer while digging an East-West Metro tunnel that led to the collapse of 23 houses. Two more cave-in incidents took place in 2022.

A proposal for sanctioning of the building plans for 23 buildings was passed in the mayor-in-council meeting on Friday.

The issue was raised at the KMC House on Wednesday by Biswarup Dey, a TMC councillor. Mayor Firhad Hakim said the civic body’s buildings wing was ready to clear building plans so that the KMRC can start construction as soon as possible.

“We share the agony through which the displaced Bowbazar residents have been going through,” said Hakim. The KMC would give the KMRC three years for completing the houses, said a KMC source. KMC officials will inspect the buildings before issuing completion certificates.
