Kolkata: Jadavpur University on Friday issued letters of punishment to 17 students who were found guilty in the ragging of a fresher, who died after a fall from the second-floor balcony of the Main Hostel in Aug last year.
“Letters of punishment were issued to 17 students who were found involved in the ragging case,” said an official. In July, JU had issued show-cause notices to 32 students.
Since 15 of them had moved court, the anti-ragging committee on Monday decided to implement the punishment for the rest.
Among the 17, around nine will be suspended for a semester till Feb and will be debarred from hostel permanently. Around four of them have already passed out, their degrees will be withheld for six months. The Fetsu ex-chairperson, who is currently a PhD research scholar, has been suspended for six months. Two other former office-bearers of Fetsu have been debarred from the campus and the hostel for life. Another ex-student has been suspended from the campus for a month.
In a separate case of holding general body meetings and raising legal fees from other residents of Main Hostel, JU on Thursday initiated an inquiry against the 15 ragging-accused students and temporarily debarred them from the hostel till the inquiry is completed. On Friday, these 15 students moved Calcutta High Court. The court in its order said that hostel suspension shall be kept in abeyance till next date of hearing.
