  • Kolkata: The Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) plans to relocate a section of hawkers in Sector V by setting up 46 rehabilitation stalls on the ground floor of the multi-level car parking complex.

The authorities are also planning to remove existing trident light poles from one side of the pavement on several stretches like Wipro to College More, from Benfish to Techno India More, from SDF building to Nayapatti, from Wipro gate no 2 to Ring Road, Webel More to Webel Bhavan, Videocon and College More to Ring Road and others, to accommodate more hawkers.“Hawkers are now occupying both sides of the road. The plan is to remove the trident light poles so that hawkers could be relocated to one side of the road,” said an official.

The process to engage a firm to set up the rehabilitation stalls has already been initiated. “There is adequate space on the ground floor of the car parking complex. We plan to set up large box-like structures so that the hawkers can shift in. There will be round-the-clock free of cost water supply and waste disposal facilities,” said an official.

A few stretches of encroachment has been cleared opposite Technopolis, and the main thoroughfare of the IT hub has been declared a no-vending zone. The civic body has also identified five plots across Sector V, ranging from five to 10 cottah, for rehabilitating the vendors and hawkers who still conduct business on the streets. Out of the five plots, there is a proposal to set up another multi-storey car parking complex with plans to rehabilitate more hawkers. A proposal has been placed before the urban development department in this regard, officials said.

According to estimates, there are around 720 registered hawkers conducting business in Sector V. Many techies who work at the IT hub prefer to have their food from these road-side stalls as it is much cheaper than standalone eateries.
