Kolkata: The family of 30-year-old Ranjana Shaw, a resident of Liluah in Howrah, whose death and the subsequent attack on doctors and nurses at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital (CMSDH) triggered the indefinite cease-work by junior doctors, claimed on Saturday that she had been left unattended for a prolonged period, which ultimately caused her death.
“My daughter had been suffering from a high fever and loose motion since Tuesday. She was receiving treatment at the Jagadishpur Primary Health Centre in Liluah, near her in-laws’ house, where she was diagnosed with dengue. As the doctors there referred her, we brought her to Sagore Dutta Hospital in Kamarhati on Friday afternoon when she started experiencing breathing difficulties. Despite our repeated pleas, no one at the hospital attended to her except to order various tests, including an ECG and a chest X-ray. As my daughter’s condition worsened, doctors and nurses still didn’t attended to her despite our pleas. It was only after a nurse gave her an injection that we realized my daughter had already passed away,” Kiran Shaw, the patient’s grieving mother, said on Saturday, breaking down in tears.
She also claimed that her relatives were falsely implicated as they didn’t carry out any attack on doctors and nurses.
“The hospital staff deliberately engaged in a scuffle with us while we were protesting against medical negligence,” the mother said.
The hospital authorities, meanwhile, have denied the allegation of negligence.
“The doctors and nurses, who were on duty at that ward, were trying their best to save life, but she died,” said CMSDH MSVP Sujay Mistry.
Police have already arrested four persons — Ishwar Lal Shaw, Pravin Kr Shaw, Saroj Kumar Shaw and Bikas Shaw — in connection with the attack on doctors.
“We have already arrested four and the CCTV footage is also being checked whether more persons were involved. A necessary legal action has already been taken to ensure the safety of all healthcare workers in the hospital,” said Alok Rajoria, police commissioner, Barrackpore.
The four have been remanded in police custody for four days after being produced in a Barrackpore court on Saturday afternoon.
However, the ongoing cease-work has caused a disruption in medical services at CMSDH, leading to fresh agitation by the relatives of patients on Saturday.
