Kolkata: Junior doctors at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital were allegedly assaulted by a drunk patient and his relatives early on Sunday. Cops on duty were quick to arrest two persons from the spot.
According to the complaint lodged by Shaswata Saha, a senior resident doctor at the emergency, the men accompanying the patient entered the department and assaulted multiple junior doctors, including female doctors, alleging delay in treatment.
Other doctors, hospital security, some patient relatives and cops intervened and brought the situation under control.
The on-duty doctors then treated the patient, Samsuddin Hossain, who had come there bleeding profusely from his right hand. Later, they lodged a complaint against him and his brother following which cops arrested them.
“Hossain, a resident of Tiljala Road, had suffered severe bleeding injuries after hitting an aquarium at his home following a family dispute. He was brought to the hospital in a drunken state. His wife and other family members had entered the emergency area despite doctors’ objection,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.
Based on the doctors’ plaint, Beniapukur cops started a case under relevant BNS sections. They were produced before a Sealdah court and remanded in cop custody till Oct 5.
“It happened around 4 am. Timely cop reaction brought the situation under control. The doctors even conducted a minor OT to stitch up the patient’s cut injury,” said principal of CNMC Subhra Mitra.
