  • A woman died on Saturday after giving birth at a private hospital in Durgapur in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district, prompting allegations of medical negligence and violent protests. The incident follows a similar scuffle at Sagar Dutta Hospital in Kamarhati near Kolkata.

After learning about the death of Ishrat Jahan, 28, a resident of the Masjid Mohalla area in Benachity, Durgapur, her family and local residents protested at the hospital alleging that the death had been caused by negligence, including the cutting of her bladder, during the surgery.

Jahan’s family claims that junior doctors conducted the surgery in the absence of senior doctors.

“On Saturday evening, the hospital informed the family that the woman had passed away. This news sparked outrage among family members and local residents, who gathered at the hospital to protest. Clashes broke out between the protesters and hospital staff when they arrived at the scene,” a police official stated.

Tensions escalated when police arrived, resulting in clashes between them and the protesters.

The hospital authorities have yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.

The family alleges that the hospital attempted to cover up its negligence, adding that it provided inconsistent and misleading information about Jahan’s condition, ultimately leading to her death.

“They killed my sister with the wrong treatment. She came to the hospital in good health and was able to walk on her own. After the surgery on Saturday, her stomach became swollen. The hospital claimed she had kidney failure. How could this happen? They know they made a mistake,” said Feroz Ali, Jahan’s elder brother.

He added that Jahan had two other children and called for appropriate compensation for their future.

The police have indicated that they will initiate an investigation if a formal complaint is filed.
