  • Kolkata: Two more persons have been arrested in connection with the assault on junior doctors and nurses by the relatives of the deceased patient at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital (CMSDH) at Kamarhati, taking the total number of arrests to six.

The husband of the deceased patient has also lodged a police complaint alleging medical negligence by the doctors on duty in the female medicine ward following her death.

The relatives of the 30-year-old woman, identified as Ranjana Shaw from Jagadishpur near Liluah in Howrah, allegedly assaulted the three women doctors, two nurses and a hospital staffer in the female medicine ward on fourth floor at CMSDH after the woman suffering from fever and acute breathing trouble had died on Friday evening.

After the incident, the junior doctors of CMSDH started a complete cease-work protest demanding proper safety and security measures. The cease-work protest entered its fourth day on Monday, leading to continued disruption of medical services at CMSDH.

After the initial arrest of four persons on Saturday, police on Monday arrested Jackie Shaw and Ranjit Shaw, who were caught storming into the ward in the hospital’s CCTV footage. The Barrackpore court has remanded the duo in police custody for four days.

Nabin Shaw, the husband of the deceased patient, on Monday lodged a complaint against the doctors on duty with Kamarhati police station, alleging medical negligence. “My wife was left unattended even after her condition started deteriorating. The doctors had only ordered tests like ECG and chest X-ray,” Shaw said, adding that his relatives were falsely implicated and that no assault had taken place.

Akash Roy, a senior PGT doctor from CMSDH, said the allegations of negligence was baseless and false. “The patient was admitted immediately after being brought to CMSDH, and doctors in the female medicine ward began treatment right away, including providing oxygen and administering CPR when her condition worsened. The hospital has all the evidence and clinical records to prove it.”
