  • Kolkata: Neurosurgeon Sandip Chatterjee, also an ace debater, passed away on Monday. He was 63. He had myeloma (cancer) but it was under control, his friends said. Towards the end, it took a toll on his heart muscles that failed.

Chatterjee was a professor of neurosurgery and head of the department of neurosurgery at the Vivekananda Institute of Medical Science in Kolkata.

Chatterjee was the consultant neurosurgeon and academic coordinator of Park Clinic which was founded by his father and paediatric surgeon Subir Chatterjee (97). His elder brother Sudip Chatterjee is a well-known endocrinologist.

Born in 1960, Chatterjee went to St Xavier’s School in Kolkata. Soon, he emerged as a versatile orator in school and later at Calcutta Medical College. Another hobby he keenly pursued was wildlife photography. Chatterjee was the founder of two debating societies and was a popular public speaker at various platforms, especially city clubs like Calcutta Club and Bengal Club. His instant wit and sense of humour were something his friends looked forward to.
