The patient, Samsuddin Hossain, and one of his relatives were arrested.
Early on Sunday morning, Hossain was brought to the emergency department with deep wounds on his hands. The doctors on duty advised immediate surgery in the emergency OT. However, the patient’s family members allegedly became agitated, demanding treatment in the emergency department itself.
As the situation escalated, they allegedly began to threaten the doctors. Police were called and were arrested.
Hospital authorities are investigating the incident and police have sought CCTV footage.
At Sagar Dutta Medical College, junior doctors have been on strike for three days since the family of a deceased patient allegedly harassed them. With this incident now, the doctors have demanded increased security measures.
A few months ago, junior doctors in Kolkata went on a prolonged strike, demanding better security measures following the incident at R G Kar Medical College where a trainee doctor was raped and murdered.
