  • A patient and his relative have been arrested for allegedly assaulting and threatening doctors and nurses at the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMC) in Kolkata, police said on Monday.

According to police, the alleged incident took place on Sunday morning when Samsuddin Hossain was brought to the Emergency Department of CNMC with deep wounds on his hands. As doctors advised immediate surgery, Hossain and his family refused to go for surgery and insisted on other forms of treatment.

“As the situation escalated, Hossain and his family members allegedly assaulted and threatened the doctors,” said a police officer.

“An FIR has been lodged with the Beniapukur police station. Acting on it, two persons – Hossain and his relative – were arrested. We have sought the CCTV footage from the hospital,” said the officer.

The incident comes in the backdrop of a similar incident at Sagore Dutta Medical College and Hospital in Kamarhati on the outskirts of Kolkata, where family members of a woman patient allegedly manhandled junior doctors and health workers on Friday night over alleged medical negligence. Police arrested four persons, all family members of the 30-year-old woman, in connection with the incident.

On Saturday, family members of a 28-year-old pregnant woman, who died after childbirth, clashed with doctors and health staff of a private hospital in Durgapur over alleged medical negligence.

For over a month, junior doctors of government hospitals in West Bengal were on strike demanding security at workplace. They have been protesting since the rape and murder of a junior doctor at state-run RG Kar hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

Following the incident at Sagore Dutta Medical College, the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF) announced to go on strike once again from Monday evening.
