  • Kolkata: On-duty doctors at RG Kar Medical College, including a woman PGT doctor, were abused and threatened by two friends of a patient at RG Kar early on Wednesday. Satya Ranjan Mahapatra, who threatened the doctors with dire consequences in front of CISF personnel, was arrested and booked under BNS sections pertaining to criminal intimidation, criminal force used against a public servant and insulting the modesty of a woman.

The patient shortly left with the other friend to complete his treatment at another hospital. An FIR against Mahapatra was registered at the Tala police station.

It was around 1.50 am on Wednesday that RG Kar’s surgery department in the trauma care unit received an injured accident victim. Three junior doctors, including the PGT, were on duty at that time.

“The patient and those with him were drunk. Out of the blue, they started misbehaving with the doctors, who were traumatised,” said a medical officer-in-charge in the trauma care unit. “The seniors, who were present around and male PGT doctors arrived in the room and called police. Some junior doctors are working unofficially. Such incidents will harm their morale.”

A senior police officer confirmed that cops on duty, with the help of CISF personnel, detained the youth. “Mahapatra was arrested after he failed to provide satisfying answers. CCTV grabs are being checked,” he said.
