  • Kolkata: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday insisted on unity and inclusivity on the day Bengal celebrated Mahalaya and Gandhi Jayanti simultaneously.

The CM reminded that Durga Puja was the most inclusive of all festivals in which all communities, irrespective of religious, social and political ethos, can participate. “Dharmo nijer, utsab sabar (religion is personal, festivity is for all),” she said.

    Without referring to the

R G Kar incident, she said at Chetla Agrani, “Those who are dishonouring Bengal don’t know what mistake they are committing.

It is like dishonouring the mother. I hope they will realise the mistake they committed.”

The CM inaugurated a number of south Kolkata pujas besides virtually inaugurating another 300-odd pujas in the districts. She added, “Remember if one path closes, another will open. Let everyone speak their mind. How does it matter? Do not get hurt by what others are saying. Keep faith in yourself. Following the teachings of Ramakrishna Paramhansa, we practise harmony among all religions,” said Banerjee. Expressing concern over the flood-hit people across the state, she lauded puja organisers for managing puja despite many odds.

The chief minister had a similar message on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti where she highlighted how the Mahatma wanted to build an inclusive society. “…His teachings of non-violence, truth, and unity continue to inspire us every day. Let us pledge to build a just and inclusive society, reflecting his vision for India,” she wrote on social media.
