Kolkata: Supporters of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, some of whom are students of Calcutta University, held up posters, showed black flags and raised slogans as the Governor C V Anand Bose entered the varsity’s College Street campus around 12 pm for the PhD degree and medal award ceremony on Thursday. Around 10 protestors were agitating as they felt that PhD degrees cannot be awarded without a convocation.
But the cops ensured smooth entry of the governor’s car to the campus.
CU held the ceremony to award PhD degrees after four years, where 536 degree recipients were awarded. There were also 235 gold medal recipients.
Bose said, “Black flag is welcome. In democracy, everybody can protest. Political parties are part of democracy. They have right to protest.” Interim VC Santa Datta De spoke about CU’s history and advised degree recipients not to stop seeking knowledge.
