KOLKATA: “Who do I blame for his death? Can his loss be ever compensated?” Shankar Sil, the father of the 14-year-old who was mowed down by an earthmover on Wednesday, asked on Thursday. The child’s mother Madhu Sil is barely able to speak.
Dinesh Nagar, close to the Sonarpur-Bansdroni border, remained peaceful but tense a day after the incident. At Boral, a short distance away from the accident spot, where the child’s parents live, everything seemed to have come to a standstill.
Former BJP Rajya Sabha MP Roopa Ganguly was arrested on Thursday morning after she stayed put inside the Bansdroni police station for close to 14 hours protesting against the death of the class IX student, Soumya Sil.
She later got bail from Alipore court on a bond of Rs 1,000.
Ganguly was also protesting against the arrest of a woman party functionary, Ruby Mondal and four others. Ruby was arrested for leading a mob that held cops hostage for around seven hours and then harassing the Patuli OC, Tirthankar Dey, forcing him to stand in water. With Ganguly staying inside the police station all night, BJP supporters led protests outside.
After her arrest, Ganguly was taken from Bansdroni police station to Lalbazar’s central lock-up around 10 am on Thursday after some cops informed Roopa, who was sitting inside the police station, that she was being arrested. She was then asked to board a police vehicle from the Bansdroni station premises, accompanied by women police officers.
Ganguly claimed she was innocent even when she was being produced at the local Alipore court. “They claim I was disturbing their work. I did nothing. I was just sitting in protest in front of the police station. The police made a mistake by arresting me. It was not the right thing to do.”
Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma said the former MP was arrested for disrupting police work.
