  • Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Friday fixed the hearing of the petition seeking action against ex-Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal on Monday. The petitioner was seeking action against the ex-police commissioner who had allegedly named the R G Kar victim in public.

The division bench of Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Bivas Pattanayak was initially reluctant the other day to hold an urgent hearing of the petition that had gone out of the list after SC took suo motu cognizance of the incident.

Senior counsel for the petitioner, Mahesh Jethmalani, appearing virtually submitted that in reply to the clarification application made in SC during the last hearing of the case held that the apex court was not involved with matters other than the rape-murder at the hospital.

The Chief Justice then asked whether counsel for the state was present in the court. There was no one representing the state. Even the advocate on record for the petitioner, Sudarshan Kumar Agarwal, was not present in the court.

The Chief Justice told Jethmalani that senior state counsel Tapan Mukherjee accepted notice on behalf of Goyal the other day. The Chief Justice also directed senior counsel Menaka Guruswamy, who had moved the court the other day, to be present on Monday.
