  • Kolkata: Hours after cops arrested the greenhorn driver, Shambhu Kumar Ram (21) — who was at the wheels when an earthmover crushed 14-year-old Soumya Sil on the crater-riddled road at Dinesh Nagar in Bansdroni, the former’s employer — Bishwakarma Sharma — was also nabbed. Cops said Sharma had suggested Ram to flee from the spot soon after the accident.

Sources said Shambhu was assigned to drive the hydra crane and not the earthmover, as reported by TOI.

However, Shambhu had driven the earthmover illegally on multiple occasions in the past three years at the behest of Biswakarma. Sources said the regular operator of the earthmover – identified as Mithu – and its owner identified as Kashi – will also be questioned . “ Shambhu had started living here with other KEIP owners,” stated DC (SSD-Jadavpur), Bidisha Kalita.

The cops stated that they had learnt why the earthmover was being operated despite no official work being underway. However, cops didn’t disclose the reason. Sources said cops would speak to KEIP and KMC officials to ascertain why the accused was illegally allowed to operate the earthmover.

Mayor Firhad Hakim said a probe was being conducted on the role of the contractor engaged in the drainage upgrade project in several parts of added areas including Dinesh Nagar.
