  • Kolkata: Two passengers were arrested after one of them allegedly assaulted an autorickshaw driver on Friday outside the main gate of the metro station in Tollygunge, following an altercation over loose change. Auto drivers, plying their vehicles between Garia and Tollygunge, protested against the alleged assault and had suspended the services on the route for some time around 11am.

Eyewitnesses claimed the passenger had given a Rs 500 note to the driver for paying Rs 15 fare. When the driver refused to give loose change, an altercation started. The accused allegedly broke an iron rod attached to the front seat of the vehicle and hit the driver on the head.

The driver started bleeding profusely. Soon, local police detained the accused and later arrested him and another passenger.

DCP (SSD Jadavpur) Bidisha Kalita said a probe was underway.
