  • The CBI has alleged that former principal of Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, and former in-charge of Tala police station, Abhijit Mondol, “wanted to hush up the incident” after a junior doctor’s body was found at a seminar hall on campus in August, and that they tried to turn the “incident of rape and murder” into suicide.

The CBI made the allegations in a submission to the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Sealdah on Friday, while seeking extension of judicial remand of Ghosh and Mondol.

The two were arrested on September 14 in connection with the rape-murder case. Days earlier, on September 2, Ghosh was also arrested along with three others by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) for alleged financial irregularities and corruption at RG Kar.

In its submission to court on Friday, the CBI said that investigators scrutinised the data extracted from CCTV footage at Tala police station as well as data from the mobile phones of both the accused. “The extraction of data of DVR and hard disk containing the CCTV footage of PS Tala and mobile phones of both the accused persons has been received from CFSL, Kolkata and the same has been scrutinised. It is clear from a number of calls that the accused persons wanted to hush up the incident,” the CBI said.

The central agency also highlighted the Supreme Court’s observations on September 30 that “the CBI as it appears before the Court is conducting an investigation on two facets – i) the alleged rape and murder which took place on 09.08.2024 at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital; and (ii) the allegations in regard to financial irregularities which were also entrusted for investigation by the CBI by the orders of a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court. Whether each of the above are disconnected features or whether there is a relationship between the two, will be investigated by the CBI.”

In this regard, the CBI said it was looking to “unearth a larger conspiracy, if any, in the case of rape and murder”, and that the “investigation on the aspect of destruction /attempt to destruction of evidence and hushing up the matter of rape and murder into suicide is still going on in full swing”.

CBI, in its submission, also highlighted that sleuths interrogated both Ghosh and Mondol inside Presidency jail from October 1 to October 3. “However, both the accused were found to be non-cooperative and gave evasive replies. Their versions need to be further verified,” the CBI said.

It said it needed to also verify the contents of phone conversations and data of Ghosh and Mondol with other witnesses and persons, and that for this, further interrogation is essential.

The court remanded Ghosh and Mondol to 14 days’ judicial custody.
