Kolkata: The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) has planned to build a vehicular underpass and pedestrian subway in front of Tata Medical Centre and another subway in front of St. Xavier’s University in New Town.
Officials said the crossing in front of Tata Medical Centre was witnessing an increased vehicular movement due to traffic moving towards Action Area III.
There is also increased pedestrian traffic at the crossing with several moving to and from the centre and crossing the road.
HIDCO has initiated the process to engage a consultant agency for preparing the plans. In the first phase, the agency will conduct a traffic survey along with looking into the underground utilities and drainage system to prepare the feasibility report. In the second phase, the agency will prepare the structural design drawing along with the estimates for the projects.
The authorities have already conceptualised to develop vehicular underpasses at four proposed locations on the main arterial road, at the intersections of Westin, Shrachi More, Noapara (between Chinar Park and City Centre II) and Chinar Park.
Officials said the conflict between vehicular and pedestrian traffic was increasing due to surge in number of vehicles plying on the main road and other thoroughfares, especially on the road leading towards Wipro and Infosys land in Action Area III. Presently, there is a vehicular underpass at Biswa Bangla crossing and six pedestrian subways in New Town.
