Kolkata: Former students of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) have taken a vow to do their bit in cleaning up the mess at the state-run medical college. The alumni convened quietly inside a hall of Jadavpur University recently to chart out their plan to clean the image of the 57-year-old medical college.
The heads of the alleged health syndicate are alumni of the college.
The ex-students said they were pained by the coinage, ‘North Bengal lobby’, as only a handful of ex-students are involved in the racket. “This meeting was meant to discuss our responsibility in maintaining the sanctity of our alma mater,” said associate professor of infectious diseases at IPGMER, Yogiraj Ray, an NBMC alumnus.
The ex-students also want the name of Avik De, an NBMC alumnus, to be removed from a plaque at the college administration building and removal of West Bengal Medical Council office from the college’s superspecialty block. Sources said council vice president Sushanta Roy used to operate from this office. Both De and Roy are under CBI lens.
“Avik De’s name is engraved on a stone plaque installed in commemoration of the golden jubilee of NBMC. We want his name to be removed,” said NBMC professor and head of radiotherapy Samar Datta, an alumnus.
