• State tells cops to ensure strict plastic ban compliance
    Times of India | 8 October 2024
  • Kolkata: The West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) has issued strict directives to police and district authorities to combat plastic pollution during the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations. WBPCB has emphasized the need for stringent enforcement of the Plastic Waste Management (PWM) Rules, 2021, which bans certain single-use plastic (SUP) items.

Despite the enforcement of these rules since July 2022, instances of non-compliance continue to be reported.

Local police stations and sub-divisional police officers (SDPOs) have been instructed to maintain strict surveillance over the manufacturing, import, sale, distribution, and disposal of banned SUP items. The focus will be on items such as PVC banners, plastic cutlery, thermocol decorations, and plastic packaging materials, said WBPCB member secretary Rajesh Kumar.

District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police have been tasked with ensuring that all Durga Puja committees strictly follow the PWM Rules. Organisers are to avoid the use of banned SUP items and raise awareness among attendees through visual signage and public announcements. WBPCB has warned that any violations will be dealt with as per legal provisions. Cops are encouraged to support awareness efforts to educate the public about the harmful effects of SUP and promote responsible waste disposal.
