  • Kolkata: The automatic number plate reader came to the rescue of the police recently in nabbing a gang of inter-state two-wheeler lifters.

“Over the last couple of months, complaints of motorcycle thefts were continuously being lodged in our South, East and South-East Division areas of Kolkata. Additional inputs came from as far as Delhi and Mumbai. Some images had been obtained through surveillance, but the blurry images and footage gave no indication of what the suspects looked like,” said an investigating officer.

“Using automatic number plate reader (ANPR) technology, we also gathered footage of a rider of a stolen two-wheeler.

Based on our inputs and source information, Alam Bari Molla was arrested from Basanti PS area and Moidul Laskar and Motiur Rahman Peyada were arrested from Jibantala PS area. During interrogation, it was learned that Alam and Moidul stole six motorcycles from Kolkata, while Motiur was responsible for the disposal of the stolen motorcycles. The investigation will continue,” said an officer.
