Kolkata: Junior doctors and protestors marched to Lalbazar on Wednesday evening after nine protesters, including junior doctors, who had raised “we want justice” slogans at the Tridhara pandal, were detained and taken to the police headquarters.
According to police, the action was taken after organisers complained that the slogan-shouting could have led to a law-and-order problem as the protesters were coming in the way of revellers.
Incensed by the cop action, other protesters decided to march to Lalbazar and were joined by a group of junior doctors. However, they were forced to halt at barricades set up by police on Bentinck Street.
Later, cops allowed some of the protesters and junior doctors to go to Lalbazar and submit a memorandum.
Earlier in the day, a similar protest at Maddox Square was handled very differently by the puja organisers. They freed up a corner for them so that they would not get in the way of those coming to view the idol.
