Kolkata: In the RG Kar rape-and-murder charge sheet submitted in court, the CBI has said that inquest proceedings and the post-mortem videography were consistent with the post-mortem report. The central investigating agency, which filed the charge sheet on the 58th day from the start of its investigation, had also checked whether any evidence was tampered with during the probe.
The post-mortem report of the 31-year-old PGT doctor had come under the scanner after junior doctors raised concerns over the transparency of the process.
They had questioned the report’s authenticity. The CBI, which took over the case following a Calcutta High Court order on Aug 13, interrogated doctors, who were on the panel that conducted the victim’s post-mortem.
The head of the forensic medicine and toxicology department at AIIMS, Kalyani, had constituted a medical board of experts to investigate the videography of the inquest proceedings. It also examined the videography of the post-mortem and the post-mortem report, checking the consistency between the two. AIIMS, Kalyani, submitted its report on Aug 19, six days after the case was handed to CBI. The report said the findings observed in the inquest proceedings and post-mortem videography were consistent with PM report.
The report of the inquest, which was conducted between 4.20 pm and 4.40 pm in the presence of the victim’s mother, mentioned she was bleeding from her eyes, mouth and private parts. It also mentioned there were injuries on her face and nail, left leg, belly, left ankle, neck, right hand ring finger and lips. The post-mortem, which was held between 6.10 pm and 7.10 pm, mentioned her death was due to manual strangulation and smothering. It mentioned the possibility of sexual assault.
The CBI requested the directorate general of health services to form a team of experts, following which a Multi-Institutional Medical Board, was set up, comprising experts from five institutes, including AIIMS, New Delhi. It was formed to provide medico-legal opinion on the case. MIMB has submitted its interim report and said the judicial magistrate inquest report showed most of the findings were consistent with the post-mortem report. The MIMB’s final opinion is awaited.
