  • Kolkata: The crackdown on rogue bikers that began on Tritiya is set to continue in the city during the remaining days of Durga Puja. On an average, cops have prosecuted 2,800-3,100 bikers daily, a large portion of them for illegal parking. At Alipore, around 2 am on Wednesday, cops issued tickets to 20-odd bikers for illegally parking close to the Alipore Sarbojonin pandal.

Cops said the protest at Bhangar was led by elements who wished for the checking to stop.“We have sent a strong message that there will be no stopping this drive,” said an officer.

“We could ensure no fatality involving bikes due to these special drives that saw 4,202 prosecutions in our night raids last year. The total prosecutions against two-wheelers crossed 10,000 during last year’s Durga Puja, with zero fatality. We wish to get the same results this year,” an officer said.

Senior officers said they will carry out special raids during the festive season as and when required. “Special drives are taken on special days. Normal checks will continue every day,” said an officer from Lalbazar.
