• Metro sees 9.5L jump in rider count during pujas

  • Kolkata: Metro Railway carried 50.5 lakh passengers during the last six days of festivities from Chaturthi (last Tuesday) to Dashami (Saturday). Puja ridership was 9.5 lakh more compared to last year.

    Last pujas, Kolkata Metro recorded around 41 lakh passengers over the six Durga Puja days even as the East-West Metro’s Howrah section, which has an intersection with the North-South line at Esplanade, was added to the network ever since it was thrown open on March 15, 2024.

    On its maiden Durga Puja stint, Green Line-2 or East-West Metro’s Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section carried around 3.8 lakh passengers.

    Ashtami and Nabami were clubbed the same day this year and Metro carried 50.5 lakh passengers from Chaturthi (Tuesday) to Dashami (Saturday). The North-South line ferried 44.2 lakh people and East-West Metro’s Sector V-Sealdah section carried 2.5 lakh people. For Blue Line, the maximum passenger count of 4.4 lakh was recorded at Dum Dum.

    “Like previous years, Metro carried the lion’s share of passengers during puja days in and around Kolkata this year. Commuters found it most convenient to use Metro to visit different pandals,” Kausik Mitra, CPRO, Metro Railway, said on Monday.
