• Monk accuses BJP Rajya Sabha MP of assault, police complaint lodged

  • A complaint has been lodged against BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Ananta Maharaj, alias Nagendra Roy for allegedly assaulting a monk in north Bengal’s Cooch Behar district, police said.

    The alleged incident took place took place on Sunday when Ray visited Ramkrishna Vivekananda Seva Ashram in Sitai block of the district.

    Roy and those accompanying with him physically assaulted Vigyananda Tirtha, the seer of the ashram, following an altercation, it was alleged.

    The police complaint was lodged by ashram authorities on Monday, officials said.

    “We are looking into the matter,” said a senior police official .

    “These are all lies. I went there for inspection. I asked the seer whether he needed any grants under the MP fund,” Roy told The Indian Express.

    Meanwhile, supporters of the monk squatted on the road in protest. Local BJP MLA Sukumar Roy said they don’t support any kind of attacks against monks and a thorough probe was needed to find out what happened.

    Trinamool Congress leader and North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha said, “I spoke to the of Cooch Behar superintendent police (SP) and asked him to take necessary action.”
