• State chief electoral officer meets DMs on bypolls

  • Kolkata: Bengal’s chief electoral officer, Aariz Aftab, on Wednesday held a meeting with the district magistrates of Bankura, West Midnapore, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and North 24 Parganas on the upcoming assembly bypolls. Elections will be held in Taldangra, Midnapore, Madarihat, Sitai, Haroa and Naihati on Nov 13.

    Aftab sought a status report on law and order in these districts and wanted to know about vulnerabilities.DMs were asked to take stock of poll preparedness and check whether all EVMs were fully functional. They were also asked to keep tabs on social media to ensure there was no violation of norms. DMs were told to remain accessible to parties and candidates and hear voters’ grievances.

    Central forces were expected to arrive by this week, an official said. There are initially going to be 20 companies of forces for each seat; this may later be increased based on local inputs and reports from DMs.

    In earlier bypolls, 30 companies had been deployed per assembly segment, the official said.
