  • Kolkata: The online single-click permission system, Aasaan, designed to secure quick approval for Kali Puja, was launched on Thursday. Sources said over 10 applicants have registered on the first day. Last year, a total of 2,644 Kali Puja organizers got themselves registered through the app. The real number of pujas, however, was five times more than that and not registered on Aasaan.

“We want concessions similar to Durga Puja,” said an organizer from the Amherst Street area. The issue is likely to be discussed in the police coordination meeting tentatively slated for next week. Apart from organizers, the Kolkata Police and various utility providers will be present in this meeting. The top brass has asked all OCs to remind organizers that all immersion processions, and the puja itself, must follow rules laid down by the courts and the administration.

“There can’t be any DJ; only green crackers can be used but only on main roads and away from electrical connections. No cracker emitting sound above 125 decibels can be burst. Crackers can’t be burst on rooftops,” an officer said.

The local police and traffic guards have been asked to keep adequate representation at the pandals, especially between Oct 30 and Nov 1-12 even after 11 pm. They have been asked to work in coordination with the organizers, especially in puja clusters like Amherst Street, Chetla, Parnasree and Pathuriaghata.

The Kolkata Police has also begun its own Kali Puja preparations after asking all its 15 checkpoints — set up at the city entry points — to begin checking for illegal crackers from Thursday. Cops indicated that closer to Kali Puja, another 28 checkpoints will be set up at important intersections in the city. In addition, two special teams — along with a Pollution Control Board official — will be prepared to carry out raids at major godowns in the city in two shifts each day.
