  • Kolkata: State cabinet minister Shashi Panja claimed on Thursday that fake news was being circulated on social media to tarnish the image of the Trinamool Congress. She was addressing party workers at a Bijoya Sammilani meeting at Behala.

“The people of Bengal are seeing everything and can judge the situation. Party workers must continue to protest against this and establish the truth,” said Panja, adding that CM Mamata Banerjee has always taken action against those at fault.

Party workers must unite to fight against attempts to popularise one-sided narratives against TMC and counter misinformation, especially in the backdrop of the RG Kar protests, the minister said.

As many as eight Bijoya events were held on Thursday, with 13 scheduled for Friday. Former Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh said work done by state govt was so extensive that fake news had no chance of winning. “The emotions of the people are being politically manipulated. A protester who had filled his Facebook account crying for justice for the RG Kar victim later went on to kill his girlfriend in Krishnanagar. We need to identify these faces. Our Bengal is different. Our cops arrested the rapist in 24 hours. They do not indulge in encounters. During CPM govt, DC Port and OC Tiljala were killed. That does not happen now,” he said.

Birbhum TMC chief Anubrata Mondal attended a Bijoya event on Thursday at Murarai. Calling for an end to internal conflicts, Mondal said: “None of us are leaders; there is only one leader — Mamata Banerjee. We will all fight as workers. I want to tell everyone not to argue with each other. What will come of arguing? For whom will you do it? For me? There’s no need of it. Everything will be better if everyone lives together in harmony.”
