  • An 18-year-old woman was found dead with burn marks on her body in Krishnanagar town of Nadia district on Wednesday morning, hours after she had left home, saying she was going out to have pizza.

The family alleged that she was gang raped and killed. Based on a complaint lodged by the woman’s family, an 18-year-old man was arrested. Police said they are also questioning his family members.

“We arrested the youth based on the complaint lodged by the woman’s parents. We are not sure if the woman died at the spot, where her body was found. There was no sign of a fire at that place,” Superintendent of Police (Krishnanagar) Amarnath K said.

“The footage from security cameras installed in that area is being examined. Only a postmortem examination can determine the cause of death and whether she was raped,” the SP said, adding that post-mortem report is awaited.

“She went out at 5:30 pm on Tuesday. When she didn’t return by 9:30 pm, we started looking for her… We think she has been raped and murdered,” said the woman’s mother.

“He (the arrested youth) wanted to break up with my sister. I told him to be patient with her as she was upset. We suspect that he and his friends raped and murdered her,” the woman’s sister added.

Meanwhile, her last Facebook post read, “No one is responsible for my death. I am responsible. You stay well.” Reacting to her social media post, the woman’s mother said: “We searched for our daughter all through the night. She was forced to write that Facebook post so that the crime could be passed off as death by suicide.”

BJP MLA Locket Chatterjee, meanwhile, met the family of the woman.

Opposition Congress and CPI(M) also protested outside the local police station, demanding the post-mortem examination to be conducted in the presence of a magistrate.
